Lakers Take Licking From Timberwolves

Luckless, Shaqless Night For Defending Champs

MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. , 2:24 a.m. PST February 1, 2001 -- Taking advantage of Shaquille O'Neal's absence, Kevin Garnett scored 21 points as the Minnesota Timberwolves beat the Los Angeles Lakers 96-83 on Wednesday night for their franchise-record eighth straight victory.

The defending NBA champion Lakers lost the second of three games without O'Neal, who is sidelined with a foot injury.

Los Angeles dropped its 16th game of the season, surpassing last season's loss total.

The Wolves defeated the Lakers for the first time in eight games, dating to Feb. 11, 1999.

Coach Flip Saunders is 3-17 against the Lakers.

The Timberwolves led 62-44 with 7:12 remaining in the third quarter, but the Lakers got back in the game with a 9-0 run.

The Lakers never got closer than nine points in the fourth quarter and were never closer than eight points since the first quarter.

Garnett also grabbed 10 rebounds for his 29th double-double this season and his ninth in the Wolves' past 11 games.

LaPhonso Ellis also recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Terrell Brandon added 19 points, seven rebounds and seven assists for the Wolves. Wally Szczerbiak also scored 19.

Kobe Bryant, who scored 47 points in a victory over Cleveland on Tuesday, made 6 of 17 shots and scored 24 points.

The Lakers' bench, led by rookie Mark Madsen's career-high 15 points, outscored the starters, 44-39.

O'Neal, who has a tendon ailment in his right arch that makes it difficult for him to push off the foot, is scheduled to see a foot specialist after the team returns to Los Angeles on Thursday.

O'Neal said he won't know whether he can play in the All-Star Game on Feb. 11 until after his meeting with Dr. Phil Kwong, the team's foot specialist.
