Anaktuvuk Pass -- This Eskimo village, part of the North Slope Borough, is nestled in the heart of the Brooks Range above the Arctic Circle. The Anaktuvuk Pass Runway Shot is part of an aviation site, designed for Alaskan pilots to check the weather conditions. It was an impressive view when I first saw it... the partially snow-capped mountain centrally placed in the shot sat earnestly against the sky's startling blue backdrop. Now -- and probably most of the year -- the view is fogged in. For that and the fact that it only updates every 30 minutes, I have to down-grade it a bit, but just wait for one of those spectacular days and tack on a point or two! Anchorage -- Our first cam from Alaska long ago, this one has since improved. This shot of an intersection in downtown Anchorage, the state's best-known city, now auto refreshes itself. There are a few mountains in the background, but little else that makes this picture obvious as coming from Alaska. But the camera image is nice. Worth +. Fairbanks -- This dim image shows a bustling street corner with some pine trees and sky. (Meaning mountains.) It is an intersection shot, again with some hills and sky in the background. The image is large, but very dim. Claims to be updated every 30 minutes. Worth . Fairbanks -- This picture is more like what we in the lower-48 expect from an Alaskan picture. This appears to be a park with a pine trees, a parking lot, a winding river of water and some sky and rolling hills way off in the distance. Quite fuzzy, though, but with some nature and the wide open feeling, this picture has to be worth +. Juneau -- Talk about breathtaking! This shot of mountains rising from the water is what outdoor netcams are all about. Alaska's natural beauty seeps through your computer screen with this one. It's a hand-operated cam, and the operator varies the view, which updates once or twice daily. A little unpredictable, but worth + Valdez -- The first of three shots from this infamous town. All equally breathtaking, even with the somewhat fuzzy camera. This one looks east, is of the large size we like and offers some foreground buildings to provide proportion for the peaking mountains that is the backdrop. Worth . Couldn't go for a higher rating because the camera quality could be better, and couldn't add a "+" because the other two are even better. All shots appear updated every 30 minutes ... Valdez -- Here's the second shot from this picturesque town, this one looking west. This one is the best of all. It shows a boat dock and loading area in the foreground (that proportion I like) and is at a nice angle toward the mountains that is the backdrop. There's a spit of land, and another mountain on the horizon which gives the feel of a waterway that continues along. Your eye really follows a line toward the horizon where your imagination takes over. Has to be worth +. Held back from a four-cam rating only because the camera quality could be a notch better ... Valdez -- Here's the last one, this one looking south. This is definitely the most "peaceful" of the lot. The camera is poised above the bay and offers a strong shot of a mountain peak. A close up shot that really takes you there. Worth , again, only because the camera quality seems poor.
