Mystery Cam: Playing Penguins Laura Bobendrier, Staff Writer February 8, 2001, 12:31 p.m. EST Wow. There's been a definite influx of e-mails suggesting new Netcam locations lately, as well as viewer locations. Gee, update a few Netcams, and see what happens? No, this is great, folks. Keep 'em rolling in. (If you don't know what I'm talking about, check out the "Newest Cameras" and "Viewer Locations" links at the bottom of this page.) I promise that we'll update the Netcam pages more often; we had kind of a lapse in the last couple of months -- it was a power struggle between Edd and myself. He's all about power, you know, ever since his WWF days as the Gangly Yuppie. It's a sad story, really; he was all set to launch his career in the XFL when he was dared to pounce on Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura. ... Apparently Ventura had been keeping in shape by flogging uppity journalists, because the mighty Gangly Yuppie came out the lesser in the match of strength. Ever since then, Edd's been insecure about giving up the tiniest bits of power -- Hey, for him to concede to me writing this column every other week is a huge step. So be kind, folks; his spirit is a bit rumpled. Enough about the Gangly Yuppie; on to this week's Netcam! This is my favorite cam so far. Who can resist these adorable penguins? Any guesses yet? Last Week In last week's column, Edd revisited the place of his birth -- virtually. The cam was of a beach in Australia. "The Wombles" was apparently a British kids' show that played in Australia when he was there. And Australians are known for drinking beer and surfing -- who wouldn't be, with all those waves and all that beer? Edd also cleverly inserted a hidden reference to Yahoo Serious, a semi-famous Australian comedian. The winners were: Wade, Frank Overton and Shirley Kramer. This Week Aww, aren't they cute? The penguins, I mean. They're your first hint -- obviously, this place must be chilly enough to appease them. However, it's not just cold: There are actually four separate natural environments side-by-side at this place. Not only that, but it's located in the middle of an urban area. ... I wonder what language the penguins hear the most from their visitors. ... And the city is pretty big into sports -- especially so in 1976. And to emphasize the level of cold, this place was pelted by an ice storm a couple of years ago that killed dozens of people. No word on whether any penguins were harmed. Know the answer yet? E-mail me with your guesses. Remember, if the hints weren't enough, the cam is linked from this section somewhere, so dig around a bit. The first three correct respondents will be graced with a mention in next week's column. Copyright 2001 by Channel 2000. All rights reserved.
